GAZ – a brand of Soviet, and then Russian, passenger cars, off-road vehicles and trucks, was established in 1932 in Nizhny Novgorod. The decision to build the factory was made by the USSR government three years earlier, when talks were initiated with Ford in connection with the purchase of a license for several models from them.

The Russian Gorky Automobile Plant is located in the Nizhny Novgorod region, on the emblem of which a deer is located. That is why the animal is the emblem on the logo of all company’s products.

1932 – 1946

The first company logo was represented in a shape of a black ellipse with a white calligraphic name of the company, under which was the inscription “named after Molotov”. On both sides of the name was the symbol of the USSR – the hammer and sickle.

1946 – 1950

In 1946, the logo took on a shape resembling the letter “M” in red color. Inside the figure was the number 20 in white color.

1950 – 1956

The 1950 logo was shaped like a red coat of arms with a thick gold rim. Inside it was an image of a deer. Above the coat of arms was a golden pentagon with a red star inside.

1956 – 1986

In 1956, the shape of the coat of arms was slightly changed, the star was now inside a gold rim. Under the coat of arms were large and small golden wings with the company’s name engraved in the middle.

1986 – 1996

In 1986, the symbol of the logo was exclusively a five-column coat of arms, inside which was an image of a deer, under which was the abbreviation of the company. The logo was done in red color.

1996 – 1997

In 1996, the logo became three-dimensional, it was burgundy with shades of yellow inside. The rim, deer and company acronym were gray.

1997 – 2015

In 1997, the logo was similar to the 1996-1997 version, only the background color of the coat of arms was blue.

2015 – present

Now the logo has two versions. The first consists solely of a gray image of a deer and the abbreviation of the name below it. In the second version, the coat of arms is present and is black with a gray rim. Inside it is a gray deer image.
